Saturday street stall: Please let Ali know what you can do even if it means an hour slot, which is fine too. Volunteers needed 11.30 – 1.30. This is one of the main ways we raise the issue of Palestine with the public at large. It takes a couple of hours (plus a bit each side to collect and return the materials). Two people at all times means you always have backup. If each supporter did one Saturday a month we would be covered.
I shall be putting the rota for the stall on our website http://oxfordpsc.blogspot.com/ from next week. People can then volunteer to fill in empty slots by contacting Ali on Alialzoubi@Gmail.com .
Friday 6th August : A presentation in Oxford about the current situation in Palestine given by two activists, Ryan Olander and Bridget Chappell, both of whom have recently been in Palestine for over 6 months, working with the International Solidarity Movement. St Michael at the North Gate, Cornmarket, Oxford . 7.00, details to be confirmed.
Tuesday 10th August ; 7.30 : Oxford Town Hall. Deborah Hyams, recently returned from Gaza, where she met many people on behalf of the Rachel Corrie Foundation, and also interviewed several politicians for Maan News, will talk about her experiences, and show some of her photographs on PowerPoint. All welcome. We shall also discuss how all of us in Oxford can coordinate our future work on Gaza and Viva Palestina.
Tuesday 12th October, 7.30, Oxford Town Hall. Mike Marqusee author of “If not for myself – memoirs of an anti-Zionist Jew” http://www.mikemarqusee.com/
ACTION ALERT: Government announces change to law on universal jurisdiction
The proposed change would make it harder to issue arrest warrants against war criminals, meaning the likes of Tzipi Livni (Israel's foreign minister during Operation Cast Lead) and Ehud Barak (Israel's defence minister) could enter the UK freely without fear of arrest.
This would seriously hamper the work of human rights lawyers in this country who are attempting to bring these war criminals to justice, and would deny the Palestinians yet another chance at justice.
Between September and December 2009, lawyers issued arrest warrants against three Israeli ministers who were planning to visit Britain. Two of them - Livni and Moshe Ya'alon - cancelled their visits as a result. The third - Barak - had his status upgraded by the then Labour government, so that he could attend the Labour Party Conference in Brighton.
If the Government's plans become law, warrants such as these will become much harder to serve.
Write to your MP now and ask him or her to sign Early Day Motion 108, which opposes any attempts to change the law on universal jurisdiction.
It's essential that you contact your MP before Monday 26th July, when Parliament breaks for the summer.

Gaza flotilla - Haneen Zouabi attacked, stripped of parliamentary privileges
Israeli ministers voted to strip MK Haneen Zouabi of her parliamentary privileges for participating on the Mavi Marmara, which saw nine people killed when Israel attacked the flotilla to Gaza in international waters. The motion, carried by a 34-16 majority in a special committee, is the first of its kind in Knesset (Israeli parliament) history. The decision has been condemned by prominent academics and representatives of civil rights groups and is the latest of a series of serious attacks on the democratic rights of Palestinian citizens of Israel.
Haneen Zouabi will be speaking at a PSC/MEMO seminar on 28 July, alongside other Palestinian members of the Israeli parliament. It will be a unique opportunity to discuss what is happening inside Israel, and the work that Palestinian Knesset members are carrying out to represent their electorate, despite the overwhelming challenges they face.

Viva Palestina 5: A lifeline to Gaza - registration now open
The terrible massacre aboard the Mavi Marmara has brought a sea change in international opinion against the inhumane siege on the Palestinians of Gaza and PSC are once again working in partnership with Viva Palestina to organise the largest ever attempt to break - and end - the siege.
A land convoy will leave from London to Gaza on Saturday, 18th September, in conjunction with convoys leaving from Casablanca and Doha and timed to coordinate with a larger international flotilla aiming to reach Gaza by sea at the same time.
PSC encourages members and supporters to get involved by fundraising in your workplace, campuses and communities; getting your trade union branches to become coalition partners; and joining the convoy. Look out for more information on our website on how you can get involved.
Registration is now open - for more information please visit: http://vivapalestina.org/vp5/intro.html
We in Oxford need to get together to discuss how best we can support Viva Palestina, coordinating all local actions.

Breaking the siege for good – future flotillas and convoys to Gaza
PSC will be working with other organisations to organise future convoys to break the illegal siege of Gaza. Look out for more information on our website in the coming weeks.
On Saturday some of us went to the NATIONAL CONFERENCE in London organised by the PSC. Lasting all day it achieved a lot in bringing so many people together to consider the next steps in the campaign. With contributions from Karma Nabulsi and Sarah Colborne of PSC, Kevin Ovenden of Viva Palestina, Greta Berlin of Freegaza, Linsey German convenor of Stop The War, representatives of the Palestinian BDS movement, British trade unions including Unite, the Methodist Conference, British Muslim, Christian and Jewish organisations and many others involved in practical actions, we found real unity. We discussed the steps needed to succed in strenthening the policies of our organisation and making our attitudes the mainstream thinking in Britain. We work with everyone involved in a rights based campaign, not being interested in laying down a bluprint for the Palestinians, whether one-state or two-state, but rather fighting for an end to the siege, the occupation, the settlements, the evictions, the attacks on democracy, and Israeli Apartheid.
No organisation owns the Palestinian struggle and several speakers emphasised that while we should all join our Trade unions, our local church, mosque or synagogue if we are religious, and so on, we work best in the forum we know – and we can continue as a diverse and pluralist movement. But while every group and individual is most effective pushing forward the initiatives they’ve started its also important to work together when we’re pushing for the same objective. We can all help and learn from each other. Let us learn how to do so more effectively.
I think we can apply these points in Oxford too.
Conference London 18th Sept, 2010
Drone Wars is a one day conference in London on September 18th to explore the growing use of armed, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), otherwise known as drones. Armed drones are used by Britain, US and others at great human cost and often in breach of humanitarian law. Used in war and for targeted killings this technology is being used by the UK with little public debate. Join other peace activists and researchers to investigate how to down the drones. Conference Programme and registration details http://www.for.org.uk/act/campaign/?q=campaigns (organised by Mary Dobbins of Oxford).

Report back: PSC conference - the next steps
PSC organised a successful conference last Saturday to discuss how to end the siege on Gaza and taking forward the BDS campaign. Co-author of the Goldstone report, Desmond Travers kicked off the conference about his findings in Gaza and representatives from key organisations campaigning on Palestine - including many PSC branches - discussed the current situation and the role we can all play towards ending the occupation.
Attendees left with a sense of unity, purpose, and clarity about how we take things forward. One participant said ‘Your conference, Campaigning for Palestine, showed me that, collectively, individuals can make a difference, and I've now joined PSC. I too will stand and be counted among you all - you made me believe that a change is on the horizon, but that we need to be the catalyst for that change.'

Scale of ethnic cleansing and apartheid in East Jerusalem shocks UK peers
Three UK peers have been talking about their experiences on a fact-finding tour to East Jerusalem earlier this month.
Baroness Jenny Tonge, Lord Nazir Ahmed and Lord Raymond Hylton visited residents of Silwan province whose homes are being demolished to make way for an Israeli theme park.
They also met three members of the Palestinian Parliament, currently sheltering in the offices of the International Red Cross, who are facing deportation for ‘disloyalty to the state of Israel'. A fourth MP, also threatened with eviction from East Jerusalem, has been re-arrested by Israel.

Gaza protestors – court reduces sentences, and police pay £25,000 for beating two demonstrators
The Court of Appeal has reduced the sentences or released seven people convicted of violent disorder at protests against Israel’s invasion of Gaza last year earlier this week.
Out of the 10 protesters who appealed their sentences, one had their conviction completely overturned and was released, six had their sentences reduced, and of those two will be released today. The judge upheld just three of the sentences.
This is further admission that Gaza protestors have been victimised. All but one of the defendants who contested their cases have been found innocent.
It was proved that one defendant, Jake Smith, had in fact been beaten up by the police on the demonstration. Last night it was revealed two other protestors have received compensation for being attacked by the police on the demonstrations.
